Reaching for the Sky: Dubai’s Towering Future

Although cities in China and the U.S. were early leaders in skyscraper construction, Dubai entered the scene later but has quickly caught up. On average, the city adds around 10 new towers each year, and in some years, over 40 are built. To keep up with this construction boom, more than 25% of the world’s cranes are stationed in Dubai. As of 2025, only New York, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong have more skyscrapers than Dubai, though none can match its towering height.

The Burj Khalifa, at 828 meters, stands as the tallest building in the world. It’s so high that the sunset at the top is two minutes later than the one at the bottom. Dubai is also home to the tallest hotel in the world, the Gevora Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road. But Dubai isn’t slowing down - next in line is the Dubai Creek Tower, which is expected to rise to a height of at least 1,300 meters.
