In response to a major high-rise fire that displaced thousands, Dubai authorities have begun enforcing rules against illegally partitioned and overcrowded apartments often occupied by low-income migrant workers. Many of these workers, earning around $300–550 per month, previously lived in makeshift rooms that pose serious fire safety risks. Despite employer housing mandates for workers earning under $400 monthly, many arrangements remain informal and unregulated. The evictions sparked concerns about homelessness and access to safe, affordable housing in a city where rental prices average approximately $1,400 per month for a one-bedroom flat.
